A PERSONAL APPROACH TO GIVING
You Can Make a Difference
Each and every dream starts with just one person who cares, one person willing to invest precious resources to improve the lives of others. The San Diego Foundation has been serving the common good throughout the San Diego region for over 30 years, making our community a better place to live, work and raise our families. GIVE WELL.
For more than 33 years, San Diego area residents have turned to The San Diego Foundation for effective charitable giving. Whether it’s a new journey or a continuing tradition, we can work with you to create impact that is meaningful and rewarding… fulfilling your desire to do good and to give well.
The San Diego Foundation provides excellent philanthropic services to our donors. Funds are managed with accuracy, accountability, and transparency. We also provide research on relevant issues so you can make informed decisions about your giving. Working with us means joining a family with other community supporters, who you will have the opportunity to meet through social and collaborative events.
You decide how much and how often we work together. We customize our relationship to fit your needs. It’s all part of what we do for those who have funds at The San Diego Foundation.
ENDOW YOUR COMMUNITY
Connecting People Who Care with Causes that Matter The Foundation is proud of its local charitable foundations, created through its endowment building initiative, Endow San Diego. Charitable foundations are now located in Oceanside, Carlsbad, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch–Del Sur and Chula Vista. They inform and inspire San Diegans about the benefits of endowments and provide vital charitable funds for region-specific needs.
Since their formation in 2005, they have achieved more than $2 million dollars in contributions and commitments throughout the San Diego region!
INFORMATION FROM THE EXPERTS
One of the best resources The San Diego Foundation provides is our collaborative work with knowledgeable professional advisors and estate planners. Nancy A. Spector is the Chair of The Foundation’s Professional Advisor Council and shares answers to the top three questions clients ask her about charitable giving.
How can I incorporate charitable giving into my estate plan?
When you meet with your estate planning attorney, make sure to ask this question. One idea is to name your fund at The San Diego Foundation or individual charities as the beneficiary of your retirement accounts, since these assets would then be distributed income tax-free. If these same assets were distributed to individuals, they would be subject to income tax.
Can I receive income and donate to my favorite charity at the same time?
Many options enable you to make a gift now and receive income for life. Some options, including a Charitable Gift Annuity, provide guaranteed income for life and may pay out as high as 10.3%. The remainder is then distributed to your fund at The Foundation or to your favorite charities following your death.
What is the difference between a private foundation and a fund at The San Diego Foundation?
It has been my experience that it is easier for donors to establish a fund at The San Diego Foundation than to set up a private foundation. Also, information regarding a private foundation is in the public domain, whereas information on a fund established at The Foundation may be private, if you choose. Private foundations also require more administrative work and include less favorable tax implications.
