The Groom's Perspective

Okay, it’s time for the groom’s perspective on things so Shelby can have a short break. So don’t expect anything cutesy in this blog ‘cause it ain’t gonna happen. As the groom, I have been entrusted with a select few things, none of which are related to the ceremony or the reception. In fact, they aren’t even related to the planning of said things. Trust me, if I had it my way we would be having an Oktoberfest-themed reception (since our date is so late in September). However, I have been asked to plan the honeymoon, along with the attire of my groomsmen and myself.

Now on to the honeymoon: ah, yes—the weeklong private party for two. This is my main duty, and will most likely be the biggest planned event of my entire existence. At first we were thinking Europe, but then it was discussed that we should go somewhere that we would probably never go to again. Hawaii—nope. Been there, done that. Australia? No, we’ll go there some other time, no doubt. Somewhere coastal and romantic (with surf)…Tahiti! The South Pacific has all the elements of the perfect island retreat. White sandy beaches, overwater bungalows complete with snorkeling gear, crystal-clear water teeming with brightly colored fish and an island-style fruity adult beverage with a small umbrella in it. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?!

Now, as a person who grew up surfing and never living more than 20 miles from a coastline, you can imagine my excitement. There was even mention of Tavarua posed to me like this over e-mail: “Honey, have you heard of a place called Tavarua?” I almost fell out of my chair. Asking a surfer this question is like asking Mickey Mouse if he knows about Disneyland. Take a look at www.tavarua.com—it’s a tiny island in Fiji surrounded by world-class surf breaks. Who knows if we’ll actually make it to Tavarua, but we’re both looking forward to Tahiti. The plan is to spend a couple of days in an all-inclusive resort so we can spoil ourselves. During the rest of the time we will go to one or two of the more remote and islands to try and avoid the commercialism. Now the biggest question is, “How many surfboards do I take?”
