The Groom's Decision

As the groom you have to be prepared to deal with planning, which means also being flexible. In other words, you’re going to be told what to do and what to wear and then have that decision changed several times before the big day. I have come to realize this and now understand that the original thought - no matter how set in stone it seems – will be altered in some way at least three more times before we arrive at a final agreement. So my lesson to other grooms is this: Don’t get too emotionally attached to the first suggestion but still offer your support. A good reply generally is something along the lines of, “Yes honey, that sounds great.” You can tailor the response for flowers, bridesmaid dresses, shoes, table arrangements, etc. You get the idea.

This is definitely true of my wedding day attire; in fact the only thing that still holds true is that the groomsmen (and I) are still wearing flip flops. My parents were coming to town and I had been mentally preparing myself for the shopping trip which was quickly approaching. My mother, sister and Shelby were all escorting me to The Men’s Wearhouse on Sunday morning. For fear of being held captive at the mall for hours on end afterwards and thus prolonging the torture, Dad and I took a separate car for a quick getaway.

I was pleasantly surprised once we arrived at The Men’s Wearhouse and were greeted by Rudy at the door. Rudy must have seen the fear in my eyes. He calmly and intently listened to the request of my fiancée. She knew exactly what she wanted and he quickly found the suit she envisioned me wearing. Of course I had to try on the jacket AND pants and then parade around as if I was on a runway to make sure all angles were just perfect. After several oooh’s and ah’s I was excused to change back into my regular clothes. My Dad at this point had been smart enough to sit outside reading the newspaper - and no less than 50 yards away at that.

So now I’m all set with my Calvin Klein linen suit which I will be wearing with a long sleeve white shirt (un-tucked) and flip flops. Done! The rest of the groomsmen will be wearing matching linen pants and a white long sleeve shirt of their choice. Who knows what challenging decision lies in wait for me next, but until then I can relax temporarily.
